FIBER BED (CANDLE FILTERS)
Galiakotwala Engineering has supplied advanced Mist Eliminator systems manufactured from speciality materials to 216+ Chemical Plants in 41+ countries across the world.
Fiber Bed Mist Eliminators are used to remove fine particles from a gas stream. Fine particles include submicron particles (i.e. below 1 micron) and particles between 1 and 3 microns. All Fiber Bed Mist Eliminators are cylindrical, with a fiber or fiber/ metal mesh layer fitted between two concentric cages. These eliminators are usually installed on a tube sheet within a tower. Soluble solids can be efficiently handled by dissolving them in a solvent, while insoluble solids can also be managed to a moderate degree. However, excessive insoluble solids may lead to plugging of the Fiber Bed Mist Eliminators.
Types of Galiakotwala Fiber Bed Mist Eliminators
Brownian Movement
Fiber Bed Mist Eliminators are used for particles in the range of 0.1 to 3 microns.
BMB Series
- The most efficient Fiber Bed Mist Eliminators are those with maximum randomization of fibers.
- This randomization enhances particle capture due to Brownian movement. The fibers are precision-packed to ensure optimal efficiency and pressure drop.
- This type of Candle Filter features a cylindrical fixed cage and specialized high-efficiency fibers. For enhanced drainage and prevention of re-entrainment of separated liquids, a special layer can be included (BMBR) Series.
BMW Series
- High-efficiency Fiber Bed Mist Eliminators with a lower pressure drop than the BMB series.
- The fiber is precision-wound to ensure optimal efficiency and minimal pressure drop.
- A special layer is included to enhance drainage and prevent re-entrainment.
Impaction Movement
Fiber Bed Mist Eliminators are used for particles in the range of 1 to 10 microns.
IMB Series
- Handles much higher gas flows than Brownian movement candles; therefore, the required number and size of candles are reduced significantly compared to Brownian movement type candles.
- Fiber is precision packed to ensure optimum efficiency and pressure drop. These types of Mist Eliminators primarily use impaction and interception mechanisms to collect particles.
Low Corrosion CorFre (SX) Type Mesh Pad
- Handles higher gas flows than the IMB series.
- Fiber is precision wound to ensure optimum efficiency and pressure drop.
- Drainage is enhanced by using a special drainage layer.
Type Mesh Pad
- This is a new development that uses co-knit layers of high-efficiency fiber.
- Filtration and drainage layers are enhanced, allowing better efficiencies and longer time intervals between cleaning cycles, reducing downtime.
How It Works
Gas streams laden with liquids flow horizontally through the filtration layer of the Mist Eliminators. Liquid particles are captured using three mechanisms: Impaction, Interception, and Brownian motion.
This allows filtered gas streams to pass to downstream equipment. As particles collide, they coalesce into larger particles or films of liquid.
These droplets or films of liquid are pushed towards the drainage layer of the fiber bed by the incoming gas. A special drainage layer in Galiakotwala Engineering Fiber Bed Mist Eliminators ensures quick and efficient drainage.

Repacking Services
We also offer repacking services for Candle Filters where the cage is in good condition but the fiber is no longer usable. This process typically restores the candle’s efficiency and pressure drop to levels comparable to those of a new filter.
What Our Customers Say
“I am pleased to report that since installing the GEC BMW Type Candle Filter in our Interpass Absorption Tower (IPAT) at our Sulphuric Acid Plant in 2019, it has performed exceptionally well. We have not observed any acid condensate at the outlet of the IPAT, indicating the filter is effectively removing any impurities.”
Manager SAP Plant
Birla Copper
“We were facing mist carryover problems in the Drying Tower for a long time. We discussed the problem with the Galiakotwala Technical Services (GTS) Technical team. They studied the issue and gave the solution of an advanced Demister Pad of SX Wire Mesh for Drying Tower and solved this prolonged problem permanently.”
General Manager (Auxiliary),
Century Rayon
“Galiakotwala Engineering Company has provided us with the best solution in form of Alloy Piping to get rid of continued issues of leakage in conventional Sulphuric Acid Piping. After installation of the Alloy Piping, we observed zero leakage and significant cost savings due to reduced downtime. Since then we have changed most of our Acid Piping in both Sulphuric Acid Plants at Haldia with their low corrosion alloy.”
General Manager (Engineering),
Tata Chemicals Limited, Haldia
“We wanted to replace our old Brick-Lined Acid Towers with a newer technology due to difficulty in location and repair of leaks in these Acid Towers. GEC gave a solution of an complete Alloy Tower 7500 mm in diameter including all internals such as Distributor, Mist Eliminators, Packing and Support, etc. We are happy to note we have observed no corrosion in last 7 years and achieved 99.99% absorption efficiency.”
JSC Apatit,
Russia
“We were continuously facing excess mist generation and moisture carryover problems in FAT and DT with the conventional distributors. Galiakotwala Engineering Company (GEC) replaced conventional distributors with Alloy Distributors in 2004. Since then, there is no change in the thickness and deformation of hole sizes of the branch pipes of the distributor. We appreciate the quality of work and and the materials used by GEC even after 18 years of operation.”
Deputy General Manager (Mechanical),
Paradeep Phosphates Limited
“We are using your Vane Separators for the last 15 years and have never faced any issues in the performance or life of the equipment. We are thankful to the Galiakotwala team for designing the special type Vane Separators according to our requirement that continues to ensure our process operates.”
Sr. Manager (Mechanical),
TATA Steel
“In 1987, Galiakotwala Engineering Company (GEC) provided our first Shell and Tube Type Heat Etxchanger with the assurance of an advanced, efficient design and manufactured with a low-corrosion alloy that would extend its lifespan. Even after 30+ years of trouble-free operation, the Heat Exchangers are still functioning effectively. We are pleased to report that GEC adhered to their commitments.”
